What Should You Serve at the Bar?
Beer & Wine vs. Full Bar vs. Signature Cocktails
You’ve picked the venue. You know the guest list. You’ve thought about the food, the music, and all the little details that make a party feel special.
Now comes one of the biggest questions: What are we serving at the bar?
Whether you’re planning a wedding, birthday party, corporate event, shower, or a fabulous party at home, your bar has a huge impact on the overall guest experience. But that doesn’t mean every event needs a fully stocked bar with every liquor imaginable.
At Fleur de Fizz, we help our clients choose a bar setup that makes sense for their event, their guests, and their budget. Here’s how to decide between beer and wine, a full bar, or signature cocktails.
Option 1: Beer & Wine
Sometimes simple is exactly right.
A beer-and-wine bar is a great choice when you want to offer your guests plenty to drink without creating an elaborate cocktail program. It works particularly well for daytime celebrations, showers, casual gatherings, corporate events, and guests who are primarily beer and wine drinkers anyway.
The key is curation. You don't need eight types of beer and twelve bottles of wine. A few thoughtfully selected options can feel much more polished than an enormous assortment.
We generally recommend offering a mix that gives guests enough variety without overwhelming the bar.
Beer and wine is a great choice if:
Your crowd primarily drinks beer or wine
You're hosting a daytime or more casual event
You want to keep the bar simple
You're working within a specific beverage budget
Fast, easy bar service is a priority
And remember: simple doesn't have to mean boring. Beautiful glassware, chilled wine, thoughtful presentation, and a well-styled bar can make beer and wine service feel just as intentional as cocktails.
Option 2: A Full Bar
If your guest list includes a little bit of everyone—the vodka soda drinker, the bourbon guy, the tequila girl, the wine lover, and the person who changes their order every round—a full bar may be the way to go.
A full bar gives your guests the most freedom to order what they actually want to drink.
It's an especially good fit for weddings, larger celebrations, evening events, and parties where the bar is going to be a major part of the experience.
But here's where people sometimes get carried away: a full bar doesn't have to mean stocking every possible bottle.
A thoughtfully planned selection of the major spirits, mixers, beer, wine, citrus, and garnishes can cover a huge range of popular drinks without turning your shopping list into the inventory of a liquor store.
This is one of the areas where bar catering makes hosting dramatically easier. We can help determine what you actually need, what you probably don't, and how to create a bar that gives guests plenty of choices without unnecessary excess.
Option 3: Signature Cocktails
This is where things get really fun.
Signature cocktails are one of our favorite ways to make the bar feel like part of the event rather than simply a place to grab a drink.
They can coordinate with your theme, season, color palette, menu, or even the personalities of the people you're celebrating.
Think:
Espresso martinis for an evening party.
A beautiful spritz for a spring shower.
A spicy margarita for a summer celebration.
A classic old fashioned for a fall wedding.
A festive champagne cocktail for a holiday party.
And don't underestimate the garnish. Edible flowers, dehydrated citrus, fresh herbs, beautiful fruit, custom stirrers, or another unexpected detail can turn a relatively simple cocktail into something guests immediately want to photograph.
Signature cocktails also help streamline service. Instead of every guest studying a long list of possibilities, you're giving them a few really good options.
Our Favorite: The Hybrid Bar
Can't decide?
You don't have to.
For many events, our favorite setup is a combination of beer, wine, and one or two signature cocktails.
Guests still have choices, but you don't necessarily need all the inventory required for a traditional full bar. It also gives you an opportunity to create something special and memorable without making the bar overly complicated.
For example:
Beer + Wine + Espresso Martini
or
Beer + Wine + Spicy Margarita + Ranch Water
or
Beer + Wine + French 75 + Old Fashioned
Now the bar feels intentional, the menu is easy to understand, and there is something for almost everyone.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Start with your guests.
If most of them are beer and wine drinkers, don't build an enormous full bar simply because you feel like you're "supposed to."
If your crowd loves cocktails and you'll have guests with lots of different preferences, a full bar might make sense.
And if you want the bar to be part of the personality and design of your event, signature cocktails are hard to beat.
The best bar isn't necessarily the one with the most options. It's the one that feels right for the party you're throwing.
